Moving home

A checklist for moving house in 2020

There are lots of different things to be considered before, during and after you’ve moved house. Moving is a stressful experience, regardless if you are upgrading, downgrading, staying in the same area or completely relocating.

It can sometimes seem like a continuous to- do list as there are lots of things to take into account. To help ease the stress and hassle of your moving experience, here is a checklist for moving home.

Who should I inform about moving house?

It is a great idea to inform any organisations or companies such as your bank and utility directly. Find out their contact information and when you need to inform them by. You will also need to inform your car insurance, doctors, dentist and schools if applicable.

This is crucial as it could mean they are deemed invalid without an up-to-date address, especially when referring to bills like your car insurance.

Change your addresses and phone number

If you’ve lived in your property for many years, you’ll have a huge number of addresses to change.

You can make this process easier by using the Post Office’s change-of-address service, which takes up to 10 days to come into effect and redirects all mail to your new address. You should keep this service for six to 12 months after moving into your new home to avoid losing the post.

If you are changing your phone number, you can also arrange for your telephone company to automatically inform callers of your new number for a few weeks following the switchover date.

When to start packing to move home

The earlier you start packing, the better. Begin packing non-essentials a couple of weeks before moving day. It’s worth planning where all your furniture will go a few weeks in advance of your move and disposing of any items you don’t want to take with you.

Keep in mind it may be a good idea to order some packing cases to help you shift your goods.

Prepare your home for the new owner

It is very helpful if you prepare a list for the new owner. This should include how to operate the boiler and alarm, the location of the meters, fuse box and stopcock, and any other information – A nice gesture for the new arrivals.

You could either label all keys or leave them in the lock that they operate. Don’t forget shed and garage keys and those tiny keys for the window locks.

Packing your household items

Unless you are getting a removal company to manage this for you, clearly label each box with its belongings or the room for which it is intended at the new house. This really will help massively once you are in your new place.

You will want to have an essentials bag that you keep on top so when you arrive in your new home you are not left without. Things like toilet roll and easy to eat snacks.
