Stockport Named as the Best Place to Live in the North West – And we Couldn’t Agree More!

We recently published an article discussing all of the exciting developments that are currently taking place across Stockport, including a brand new multi-million-pound bus interchange with its two-acre Viaduct Park and a host of rejuvenation projects taking place across the town.

With all of that going on, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the fact that Stockport is already a fantastic place to live and celebrate what our hometown has to offer – and all of the attention it has been enjoying recently.

Stockport is a Fabulous Place to Live

Hot on the heels of the town’s ongoing improvement projects, Stockport was named the ‘Best Place to Live in the North West’ in the annual Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide. The recognition comes as Stockport Council continues to lead with its ambitious £1bn development and regeneration programme that aims to build on the great attributes of the borough.

“It’s fantastic to learn that the Sunday Times has named Stockport as the best place to live in the North West, which is just the latest accolade for Stockport and further national recognition. It’s not just us saying we’re one of the most exciting towns around, it’s coming from people far and wide and we couldn’t agree more. We’re committed to making Stockport a place everyone here is proud to call home,” says Councillor Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council.

“The town centre has been transformed by more than £1 billion of investment – one of the largest regeneration programmes nationally – so this latest news comes at a very exciting time for Stockport. In just a few days our state-of-the-art transport Interchange and our fabulous new Viaduct Park will open and, as Greater Manchester’s Town of Culture, next week we are hosting a whole weekend of activities to celebrate the town’s fantastic cultural offer. 2024 is our biggest year yet.”

Six other locations in the northwest are featured in the comprehensive guide which includes 72 locations across the UK, released on Friday, 14 March and in its magazine supplement on Sunday 17 March.

These include:

  • Winner: Stockport, Greater Manchester
  • Christleton, Cheshire
  • Kendal, Cumbria
  • Knutsford, Cheshire
  • Prestwich, Greater Manchester
  • Ribble Valley, Lancashire
  • Sefton Park, Liverpool.

A Town For Everyone

Before this latest accolade, consumer group Which? recognised Stockport as one of the 12 best places in the UK to live during retirement. The borough was also recognised as an ideal destination for first-time buyers by The Times newspaper, making Stockport a wonderful location for individuals and families of all ages.

It’s certainly not hard to see why, with so much to see and do about town. Stockport’s historic Underbanks area was recently named one of the 25 best places in the country to shop by the Telegraph, and the ongoing developments to the town will only enhance this reputation.

If you need a little further convincing, allow us to share a little secret with you – the writer of this article only discovered Stockport recently and has developed a definite soft spot for the town. Having moved to the North relatively recently and beginning a career with Edward Mellor I had the chance to explore Stockport personally and was immediately struck by how positive the town feels to visit.

I’ve found welcoming local pubs with friendly atmospheres, plenty of choices for where to eat during lunch breaks and several quirky stores selling everything from records to books and film memorabilia – it’s fantastic. So take my work as an outsider and relative newcomer to Stockport, it really is an amazing town and I highly recommend it!
