Property Enquiries surge by 70% as market reopens, says Rightmove

On Tuesday evening, Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick announced that home moves and viewings could resume in England.

From this moment, the housing market was officially given the green light to reopen its doors.

Many industry experts, including our CEO Colin Mellor, predicted that a huge wave of pent-up demand would hit once the market reopened.

And since the news broke, we’re seeing these predictions rapidly transform into reality.

The morning after the announcement, property portal, Rightmove reported a 45% increase in the number of visitors to the site compared to the day before.

The portal also says email enquiries about viewings increased by 70% and that agents listed 2,115 new properties during the first five hours of trading on Wednesday.

Rightmove’s Housing Market Expert Miles Shipside, says:

“These are clear signs that the news from the government has prompted more home-hunters to start looking for their next home, and we anticipate further uplift in activity once agents have time to adjust to the new social distancing guidance specific to the home moving sector.”

How has the local property market reacted to the news?

Here at Edward Mellor, we’ve seen a huge surge of activity since the announcement.

Our site visits jumped by nearly two thirds from Tuesday the 12th to Thursday 14th and our phones have been ringing off the hook.

Thankfully, our dedicated teams have been working remotely from home throughout this period, so we’re equipped to meet our client’s needs.

From virtual property tours to online mortgage consultations, we can take care of almost every aspect of our customer’s journey from a distance.

However, we are currently putting the necessary safety precautions in place to offer a wider range of services such as viewings, valuations and surveys.

Our CEO of Colin Mellor commented:

“The property market was always going to see an explosion of activity after such a long period of inactivity.

So if you are thinking of moving, now is the time to take advantage of the pent-up demand.

We’re one of few high street agents who are still fully operational and in a position where we can support the needs of each and every customer.

So if you’re ready to put your house on the market, we’re ready and prepared to help you make a safe and successful move.

We’ve invested a lot in technology over the past couple of years and are delighted to be able to offer products to our clients that make all the difference in today’s climate.

With our use of technology and outstanding customer service, we’ll make sure everyone related to all property transactions are looked after in an extremely safe environment.”
